8 Tips on Styling Interiors for Publication

Interior Design Photography

As a branding | interiors photographer + stylist in Central NJ and beyond, my interior designer clients, builders, and architects look to me to guide them on the best practices to styling for publications.

Styling for editors and consumers is different from styling and decorating for residential and commercial clients.

Having an eye for what translates editorially is part of my job as an interiors | interior design photographer + stylist. Here are some tips on how you can help get your projects published in print and online!

  • Bringing nature inside. Using branches, wildflowers, tropical leaves, and unique flowers in a large clear or clay container is stunning and stands out.
  • Use interesting bowls with colorful fruit or vegetables.
  • When styling pillows for publications, the karate chop is out! Leave your poor throw pillows alone and “no karate-chopping!”
  • Turn out the lights! Please, please, please, turn off all artificial lighting. Allow the natural light to stream through the windows. Make sure you have your compass to ensure you photograph your space at the optimal time to provide the best natural light.
  • Make sure the spine of books on a bookcase are facing out!

  • Clean countertops, floors, and bathroom mirrors!
  • Hire a professional interiors photographer who is also a stylist, that’s me!

I know some of these tips may sound silly, but I promise if you begin to incorporate some or all of them into your interior styling and photography, you may catch the eye of an editor and get published!
