When designer Victoria Freise invited me to photograph her latest project, “Nostalgic Holiday,” I knew it would be something special. Recently featured in House Beautiful, the shoot celebrated the magic of holiday traditions by embracing well-loved heirlooms—china, crystal, and vintage ornaments—that evoke the warmth of cherished memories.
Freise’s design philosophy for this project encourages a shift away from the predictable and toward the sentimental. “You may find china, crystal, and vintage ornaments that bring you joy and remind you of your childhood,” Freise shared in the House Beautiful article “The Holiday Hater’s Guide to Decorating This Season.” Her idea of placing a vintage ornament atop a holiday place setting brings an intimate, personal touch to any table, and I was tasked with bringing this vision to life through my lens.

For me, this photoshoot was all about storytelling. Through carefully composed frames, I aimed to highlight not just the beauty of the pieces but the emotions they evoke. To enhance the nostalgic tone, I used soft, natural light that mimicked the glow of a winter morning. Shadows played a key role in creating depth and showcasing the intricate details of the vintage pieces.

Each shot was composed to draw viewers into the story. Freise’s thoughtful layering of textures—delicate linens, gleaming glassware, and timeworn ornaments—deserved a spotlight. Close-up shots brought these details to life, emphasizing the craftsmanship and patina of each piece.
Working with Freise on this project was a joy. Her talent for blending timeless heirlooms with contemporary styling inspired my photographic approach. Together, we created a visual narrative that felt both elegant and heartfelt, perfectly capturing the spirit of a “Nostalgic Holiday.” As we head into the holiday season, this project serves as a reminder to look to the past for inspiration. Sometimes, the most meaningful decorations aren’t new—they’re the ones that carry the stories of those who came before us.
